How it all began...
On July 5th 2006, the Venezuela Solidarity Network (VSN) launched a public campaign to stop the distribution of the video game “Mercenaries 2: World in Flames”, the game that depicts the virtual invasion of Venezuela, the overthrow of the government, the destruction of major Venezuelan cities and rural areas, and the takeover of the oil industry.

The public campaign was launched after there was no response from the game producer (Pandemic Studios) or from Bono of U2 and his investment company, Elevation Partners, the company that has invested $300 million in Pandemic Studios.

Venezuela Solidarity Emergency Response Network

U.S. government officials and other high-profile individuals repeatedly portray the overwhelmingly popular and democratically-elected government of Hugo Chavez as a dictatorship and a "negative force in the region". The U.S. government has even attempted to overthrow the Chavez government. At each provocation, the workers, peasants, and poor of Venezuela have mobilized by the millions to defend themselves. The Venezuelan people have a sovereign right to determine their own destiny without foreign interference. By joining the Emergency Response Network, you pledge to take solidarity action with the people of Venezuela in the event of further provocations.

By signing up for the Emergency Response Network you will receive email alerts with suggested actions in the face of egregious US government actions toward Venezuela.

The Venezuela Solidarity Network asked grassroots organizations around the country to support Venezula’s democracy by holding community meetings during the third week of October, 2006. These meetings brought communities together to formulate local Emergency Response Action Plans in the event of a critical intervention by the US against Venezuela. Each community developed a local plan of action, and chose a representative to help consolidate these plans into a National Emergency Response Plan. Get involved in your community’s ERN!

Buy Citgo Gas to Fuel Democracy

Boycott conglomerates and multinational corporate hegemony and support democracy-building in Venezuela at the same time. Citgo is a company is owned by PDV America, Inc., an indirect,
wholly owned subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A., the national oil company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

Citgo is the US refining and marketing arm of Venezuela's state oil company. Revenue from this oil at the current high market price has enabled Hugo Chavez to carry out social investments and democracy-building. A success for that democratic economic experiment in Latin America is a threat to the corporate control everywhere.

A simple, painless way for American progressives to continue social change in Venezuela is to fill up at Citgo stations rather than Shell, Mobil, Exxon, Chevron or whatever.
