VENEZUELA: "Two Perspectives" on Saturday's march
Posted by Walter Lippmann
June 3, 2007

Last week saw a series of student protests against the non-renewal of RCTV's concession which drew no more than 5,000 participants, but these were nevertheless reported as having "tens of thousands" in the foreign press.

The response from Chavistas came yesterday, and despite boasting HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of participants who turned out to celebrate the end of RCTV, the international press (no doubt for a fake sense of "balance") also reported the same "tens of thousands."

The best example of this press bias (read: war) can be seen in the following screen shot from opposition-controlled Globovision.

On the right is the view of the Chavista march as all rules of journalism would demand it be shown: from the front (courtesy of Channel 8). On the left is Globovision's "alternative perspective," a shot from more than half a mile away, which makes it look like the march is small when it was in fact massive.
